In the 17th century, the then ruler of old Delhi (which is also known as the land of walls) Shah Jahan built a magnificent which came to be known as the Red Fort. Shah Jahan had named it Qila-E-Mubarak. This fort is spread over an area of 250 acres of land. It was the official residence of the Mughal Emperors before it was taken over by the British government from Bahadur Shah Zafar in 1857.The Red Fort Delhi is a mesmerizing piece of architecture, lying on the banks of Yamuna River. The eastern side of the fort faces the river. The fort has two important entrance, the Lahore Gate on the west and Delhi Gate on the south. The main gate is the Lahore Gate. The Indian flag always fly high on the gate here all the time. The Independence Day speech by the Indian Prime Minister is delivered from a platform in front of the Lahore Gate.
