Kathmandu Valley
As the name suggests, this place is a valley surrounded by mountain ranges. Lying 1400m above sea level, Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. This beautiful city is situated on the banks of River Bagmati, in central Nepal. Kathmandu is a densely-populated city. The most important attractions here are the Durbar Squares at Bhaktpur , Patan, Kathmandu; the Palace Museum, Pashupatinath temple, Dakshin Kali temple, Boudhanath Stupa and so on. There are no auto-rickshaws in Nepal. Instead, the travellers can hire Maruti 800 taxis and mini buses. You can go on a shopping spree at Sun Tara and Thamel. Pokhara
Known as the gateway to the Annapurna mountain ranges. Lying in the valley of Annapurna, the main attraction here is the Fewa lake. This beautiful lake has boating facilities and the restaurants which provide world class cuisine on its banks. Travellers can spend their evenings here to relax and enjoy the beauty of the lake. Another place not to miss is Sarankot view point from where you can see sun rise, sun set and the city below. The other places of interest include the Devi’s waterfalls (Patale Chhango), caves and Tibetan settlements. Pokhara is also famous for its paragliding, river-rafting and Annapurna trekking facilities. There are many hotels to stay at Lakeside, another popular destination in Pokhara.
Chitwan Wildlife Sanctuary
This park is a part of the important Parsa reserve forest in Nepal. This is the homeland of the ethnic tribal community called ‘Tharu’. The rivers Narayani and Rapti joins here in this beautiful forest. The main attraction here is the one horned rhino. The other wild animals found here are tiger, leopard, crocodile and 500 varieties of birds. There is also an elephant breeding centre here. The tourists get to enjoy the colourful Tharu cultural show, Tharu museum and ride in traditional boats through the river. Visitors can stay at the hotels in Sauraha.
The other important places in Nepal are Muktinath, Janakpur (birthplace of Sita), Ilam. You can also visit Sikkim and Darjeeling by riding in night buses from south-eastern Nepal’s Kakarbhitta which shares a border with Bengal. Once you cross the border here, it is east to reach Siliguri. Plenty of vehicles are available from here. People planning to visit Kailasa Manasarovar starts their journey from Kathmandu. The ideal time to visit this pilgrim place is from March to June when the place experiences a pleasant weather. It is advisable not to plan any travel during rainy season. By the month of October, the skies clear and the weather turns pleasant again. The months of December, January and February are extremely cold here. Nepal is famous for its natural Himalayan beauty, adventures, wild life and bird watch.
